In my perspective, happiness does not always increase in direct ratio to the rise of money. Focusing on the illusion that money brings happiness may have an unexpected adverse effect that may lead to a misallocation of time. For instance, when some one reflects on how money would change their sense of well-being, they would probably tempt to think about spending more time in leisurely pursuits such as seeing a three-dimensional movie or traveling abroad. But in reality, they would have to spend a large amount of time working and commuting and less time engaged in experienced happiness. On the other hand, it is undeniable that money has a brief effect on life satisfaction, particularly after we have got enough money to satisfy our fundamental need. For example, people who get richer would feel they are better than their peers. Nevertheless, they will soon make richer friends. Therefore, their relative wealth will not be greater than it was before; people quickly get used to all new stuff their money can buy and the amount of money people say they need rises along with their income. Consequently, the endless and vicious cycle in terms of physically and psychologically stress begins again. In conclusion, I believe that money does not always buy happiness, but it is not indicated that money cannot brings happiness. It is of great importance to deal with money more carefully and appropriately. Instead of lavishing money in an ostentatious way, we should be aware of that it is romance, friendships, good health, families that truly bring us happiness.

What Is the Coattail Effect in Politics

The coattail effect is a term in American politics used to describe the impact an extremely popular or unpopular candidate has on other candidates in the same election. A popular candidate can help sweep other Election Day hopefuls into office. Meanwhile, an unpopular candidate can have the opposite effect, dashing the hopes of those running for offices lower down on the ballot. The term coattail effect in politics is derived from the loose material on a jacket that hangs below the waist. A candidate who wins an election because of another candidates popularity is said to be swept in on the coattails. Typically, the term coattail effect is used to describe a presidential nominees impact on congressional and legislative races.  The excitement of the election helps to increase voter turnout, and more voters may be inclined to vote a straight party ticket.   Coattail Effect in 2016 In the 2016 presidential election, for example, the Republican establishment became increasingly concerned about its candidates for U.S. Senate and House when it became clear Donald Trump was a formidable candidate. Democrats, meantime, had their own polarizing candidate to worry about: Hillary Clinton. Her scandal-plagued political career failed to generate enthusiasm among the Democratic Partys progressive wing and left-leaning independents. It could be said that both Trump and Clinton had coattail effects on the 2016 congressional and legislative elections. The surprising surge for Trump among working-class white voters — men and women alike — who fled the Democratic Party because of his promise to renegotiate trade deals and levy stiff tariffs against other countries helped elevate Republicans. The GOP emerged from the election in control of both the U.S. House and Senate, as well as dozens of legislative chambers and governors mansions across the U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan credited Trump with helping the Republicans secure majorities in both the House and Senate. This was largely due to his decision to invade Iraq in what became an increasingly unpopular war by the end of his second term. Obama energized Democrats to vote. His coattails in 2008 were short in a quantitative sense. William Wordsworths â€Å"The World is Too Much With Us† is a Romantic Sonnet that can be broken into two parts. The speaker tells us in the first part that we have lost our connection with nature, and that that connection was one of our most important relationships. The speaker the goes on to tell us that that he is willing to sacrifice everything to recover this relationship, and begins on line 9. In romantic poems, the speaker tries to convince us of our flaws, in this case our skewed relationship with nature, and convince us to change our ways. The speaker in Wordsworths poem is no different in this respect, and utilizes shock to grab our attention and really get us to notice just how serious he believes this problem is. Although he uses†¦show more content†¦Wordsworth, however, shows both sides of nature. He does show nature as gentle when he talks about â€Å"sleeping flowers† (7) and when he talks about the â€Å"Sea that bares her bosom to the moonâ₠¬  (5). He talks about nature as frightening and dangerous when he says that â€Å"The winds that will be howling at all hours† (6). This shows not only the fury of nature, but when contrasted with more gentle images, the speaker shows the versatility and inclemency that comes with nature. This helps the audience to trust the speaker more, because he is being honest about nature, and adds to the future shock of his embracing it. Another way involves the structure of the poem. Being an Italian sonnet, the poem is supposed to break into two different sections, the first being eight lines and the second being six. While Wordsworth does break his poem into two parts, he does it midway through the ninth line. Although this may not mean much too us, but scholars and other well read people of his day would notice this immediately. He does this because a main theme of this poem is to break away from the rules governing society, and he is clearly doing that with the structure of the poem. The other two uses deal with the language and content of the poem. The other also occurs on line 9 where the speaker curses in the middle of the line proclaiming â€Å"Great God!† Cursing like this was seldom heard in public back then, and was certainly not common in poetry. Choose a scene in Blood Brothers Essay Blood Brothers was written by Willy Russell, Willy was born in Whiston on the outskirts of Liverpool in 1947. The play Blood Brothers was first performed in a secondary school in Fazakerly, a suburb of Liverpool in 1982. On the first night it was performed in front of four hundred pupils, there were minimal props, scenery and music, but over the years it has been developed onto Broadway in 1993. It ahs been translated into at least ten different languages and is performed regularly all over the world. The play is set throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s with the main themes brought out at the end, which is set in the 80s. Russells intentions in the play were to show the division of class between the Lyons and the Johnstone family by the use of language, music and the way the actors and actresses portray themselves on stage. The play was written during the recession in the 80s, the times are very clearly reflected in the play and so is the outcry against Thatcherism, because the Prime Minister at the time Margaret Thatcher caused poverty for the working classes by closing the factories, coal mines and steel works. Writers such as Osborn and Delaney, who wrote Novels like Look Back in Anger and A Taste of Honey. These two writers had similar writing techniques to Willy, they always used themes of poverty in the North. Willy also wrote plays such as Our Day Out, Educating Rita, and one of his most well know plays that was turned into a T.V series Shirley Valentine. Blood Brothers is about two very different families, the Johnstones and the Lyons. The two families have only one thing in common. Mrs Johnstone is poor with too many children that she can handle; she then finds out she is expecting twins. Mrs Lyons has lots of money but no children and she really wants a child, Mrs Johnston cleans in Mrs Lyons house and when she tells Mrs Lyons she is pregnant. She asks to keep one of her babies, after a lot of persuading Mrs Johnstone gives in and the two brothers Mickey and Eddie grow up and become friends in ignorance of their fraternity. As they get older they drift apart as the class and money issue becomes more apparent between the two. Until one day the inevitable quarrel unleashes a blood bath. They play both starts and ends with the death of the two brothers who only find out the truth on the day of the joint death. The scene I am going to study is the last scene in the play where Mickey and Eddie die. In this scene the main characters Mickey, Eddie, Mrs Johnstone, Linda and two policemen. The themes in this scene are class, love, family, rivalry, violence and superstition. The most dominant theme is class, this becomes apparent because Mickey gets frustrated and jealous of the lifestyle of his rich friend, who then Mickey finds out is his twin which fuels anger inside him because he could have had the lifestyle Eddie had. This influences Mickey to pull the trigger on Eddie at the end. Mickeys last line of the play is I could have been him! Violence is another theme, which starts quite early in the play when the twins are little and they used to play in the street, they would sing things like I got y, I shot y an y bloody know I did. Even when they were young they used bad language influencing violence, it was always Mickey who was the ring leader of the two and Eddie just wanted to be like Mickey, but as the grow older and mature it becomes the other way around. Superstition is another strong theme and at the end of the play the Narrator gives us a choice: do we blame superstition or class? The movie portrays how gruesome and heartless people become after being number by the feeling of death. The way the men constantly run into the fire of the machine gun seems so pointless, it seem possible to be helping the war effort at all. At one point in the movie Paul falls into a trench with a French soldier. Paul stabs him and kills the Frenchman. Once the Frenchman is dead Paul seems to feel remorse and speaks to him talking about how they could be brothers and friends. He explains he didnt want to kill him but thats how he has to survive and that no one will ever realize we all can live together. The general feeling of anti-war comes through during his speech to the dead Frenchman The morals that people normally held high at this time were all put in the back of their minds to survive. When one of the boys begs his friend who lost his leg for his boots it was a very low thing to do but he needed them and his friend did not. Another example of the way the movie portrays the lost of morals is when the young women invite the boy over and in return of the boys bringing food the ladies give them sexual pleasures. And yet again when Paul comes home he lies to his mother and to a mother of one of his dead friends. Paul felt the need to lie to the dead mother but when she begs for the truth because she knows her son did not die an easy death he still refuses to tell the truth. The trend does not seem reversible in the near future as there are very few viable alternatives to those causing harm to the environment and which humans can harness to the same magnitude as the unclean sources. The hunger for more energy is not the sole cause of environmental degradation. On the contrary, social inequalities on the lines of influence, material wealth and gender have been mentioned as part of the contributors to this dangerous trend. Environmental deterioration is not a light matter. In fact, there are numerous numbers of people who bear the blunt for the damage done to the environment. These effects may be manifested in the health, livelihood and well-being of the victims. Pollution and natural resource depletion can be in terms of soil erosion which robs the soil of its mineral contents and renders it infertile hence unable to sustain plants, deforestation which entails the cutting down of the very vegetation that is responsible for the purification of air and formation of rainfall and the depletion of both plant and animal species which inadvertently occasions an imbalance in different ecosystems (Munasinghe, 1993). When these occurrences happen, people are forced to change their ways in a bid to adapting to the new conditions. Consumption and production patterns are affected. The changes that lead people to change their income generating activities, to migrate and reorganize their entire livelihoods ultimately lead to the change in social structures (Vivian & Ghimire, 1990). The transformations usually have a ripple effect on other societies and the result is that more pressure is put on the existing natural resources. For example, a family that is dependent on electrical energy for their domestic usage in rural areas and who experience a dip in their disposable income will be forced to result to more economic sources of energy. This might lead them to adopt firewood an d coal as their primary source of fuel. Naturally, these alternatives are part of the environment and as such, more pressure on the already dwindling natural resources. All living things are made up of small blocks known as cells. These cells play a big role in the existence of all living things even though we cannot see the cells with our naked eyes. After we have a good look at the functions of a cell and all the organelles found in them we will have an understanding on the big role played by these minute organelles. Small blocks known as cells make up all living things. The cells that we will be looking at today are the eukaryotic cells. In the eukaryotic cells are tiny cellular structures known as organelles that perform unique specific functions in order to keep the cell alive. To help us better understand and explain what really happens in a cell we can look at a country like the UK. In the UK they are different government departments, organisations and sectors that work together for the good of the country. UK in this case may be likened to a cell and the organisations, departments, sectors will represent the organelles. In order to separate the inside of a cell from its environment the cell is surrounded by a membrane that acts as a protector for the organelles. All membranes are permeable to regulate the transport of materials in and out of the cell through small pore (Sue Hocking,2008). The largest organelle in the cell is called the nucleus and it is surrounded by a nuclear envelope which is a double layered structure made of two adjacent membranes. The envelope has pores which enable communication between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The nucleus is the control centre of a cell where all instructions are passed on to other organelles. Just like the parliament of the UK we could agree that it also has a similar duty to pass all legislation of the land and assess all laws to ensure a good and safe life for its citizen. The nucleus contains coded genetic information in the form of DNA molecules which are involved in the synthesis of proteins (Ann Fullick et al.,2015). The DNA detects what the cell is going to do and how it will do it. Inside the nucleus is a dense ,spherical structure known as the nucleolus which is responsible for the production of ribosomes. The nucleolus is like a factory. Ribosomes according to Gareth Williams (2000),are tiny organelles that are found in large numbers in a cell. They have a diameter of about 20nm. They attach themselves to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) after leaving the nucleus and this is known as the rough endoplasmic reticulum(RER). There is another type of endoplasmic reticulum without ribosomes known as smooth endoplasmic reticulum, the other ribosomes float freely in the jelly like fluid known as cytoplasm. Enzymes are synthesised in the cytoplasm by the ribosomes. While the main function of the endoplasmic reticulum is producing and packaging proteins. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces lipids and steroids. The synthesis of a protein shows the division of labour in a cell.   Ã‚   We also have some organelles that were first observed by the Italian scientist Camillo Golgi. These organelles are known as golgi, they appear as stacks of flattened sacs. Assembling glycoproteins such as mucin by combining protein and carbohydrates. The golgi also produces digestive enzymes and the formation of lysosomes. Lysosomes are spherical sacs surrounded by a single membrane and they contain some powerful digestive enzymes that help in breaking down materials(Micheal Kent 2000). Organelles in a Eukaryotic cell Fig 1 (www.enhantedlearning.com) As evident in fig 1,we also have the mitochondria organelles which are important in the synthesis of energy in the form of ATP by a process called Respiration. This energy is made available to the cell in molecular structure. Active cells will normally have a lot of mitochondria available. C J Clegg(2000) says the mitochondria are relatively large organelles and has a double membrane, the inner forms many folds called cristae. Entry and exit of all materials is controlled by the outer membrane , as the movement of people is also controlled by the boarders that are in place. Cell membrane are present in all cells and they facilitate the movement of substances into and out of the cell. It also goes on to provide protection for the cell. According to Ann Fullick(2000) all cell membranes are made up of two main molecules which are the lipids and proteins. These molecules react differently as the head is hyrophilic(water loving) while the tail is hydrophobic (water-hating). Cell membranes are selectively permeable meaning they let in some molecules and keep others out Below is a diagram of a phosopholipid bilayer in Fig 2 AN IMAGE OF A PHOSOPHOLIPID BILAYER Fig 2(The Science of Biology,2007) C J Clegg (2000) says materials that go through the membrane will use the basic types of cellular transport which are available which are passive transportation(no energy needed) and active transport(energy needed). In passive transport we have diffusion(movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration),facilitated diffusion is also movement of particles from high to low area of concentration but this type of diffusion uses a transport protein. Osmosis also falls under the passive transport(special type of diffusion involving water molecules). In this type of transport the cell does not need energy. The second type of transport is called active transport(cell needs energy ). In active transport energy is needed as the molecules will be moving from an area of low concentration to an area high concentration. Endocytosis is the movement of large particles or fluids through the membrane into the cytoplasm of a cell(Bill Indge,2000). Exocytosis is the movement of particles from inside the cell. Finally we have protein pumps that are integral membrane protein that are capable of transporting protons across membranes. The cell plays an important role in all living things despite the fact that it is so small and also we have seen that the cell has many organelles which are present to carry out different and unique functions in order to keep the cell alive. Without cells there is no life.
